Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Caroline Sandlin and Jill Carway

Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, It's the Most Wonderful FIND of the Year!, featuring works by member artists Caroline Sandlin and Jill Carway, on view through Nov. 30, 2008.

The exhibit promotes the socially-conscious "Buy Handmade" trend in gift-giving. The exhibit considers a less commercial, more thoughtful, more meaningful holiday season. The artisan, the giver, and the recipient become part of a shared story that is the life of handmade fine craftwork. Sandlin and Carway take this connectivity one step further through the functionality of their work. Their jewelry and pottery provide the recipient a sensory connection to the skill and craftsmanship of the artisan unavailable in their mass-produced relatives, with the giver being the link in the relationship.

Wonderful Find is a lighthearted approach to the annual activity of holiday shopping. It encourages the visitor to look beyond the mall to more unique and thoughtful gifts for all the people on their list.

Sandlin, of Hollywood, SC, creates jewelry in her rustic studio in the woods. Her down-to earth pieces are crafted from her own fabricated sterling silver and copper components, her hand formed and kiln-fired pottery beads and pendants, and a variety of other beads and goodies from all over the world. Her goal is to create durable, unique, fun and high quality pieces that are affordable for women of all ages and means.

Jill Carway

Carway, of Summerville, SC, creates functional pottery - useable art. Her work takes a variety of forms from her whimsical "pillow vases" to serving vessels to Raku lanterns. Her primary medium is white stoneware that is safe for use with most kitchen appliances. Carway custom mixes her glazes, and the hand-painted and carved decorations reflect natural forms. Her fresh colors and hand-painted designs elevate the status of the housewares we use everyday.
