City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Brian Rego

City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the debut exhibit, Personal Interpretation, featuring oil paintings by Camden, SC, artist, Brian Rego, on view from Nov. 13 through Dec. 13, 2008.

Rego earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Carolina and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The current exhibit demonstrates the deep connection that Rego has developed among artist, subject and inspiration. His current work features imagery from the Millbank area. Though Millbank is an area that Rego has only known for a short time, the outdoor scene has been a staple in his portfolio for many years. A deep respect for the landscape and its always-shifting nature is at the very heart of much of his work. "I never take it for granted," Rego said. "I continue to experience moments in nature that surprise me."

It is in this same vein that Rego describes his inspiration. "Over the years my most consistent form of inspiration has been discovering God over and over again," he said. "Whenever I think I am pursuing something other, I find that it was a pursuit of Him all along."

The circular connection of this show ultimately brings the viewer back to the artist. Not only does the artist find his inspiration in the outdoor scene, he also finds himself. The body of work put together for the Millbank exhibit documents the artist's experience of a specific place and time, and how recent changes in his life have altered his relationship to this place. "It really is a series of self-portraits," said Rego. The interconnectedness of this show between painter, scene, and inspiration is truly apparent. The viewer will leave feeling as though he or she has gained a more personal understanding of Brian Rego.
