November Issue 2008

Corrigan Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Lese Corrigan

Corrigan Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Mid-River, featuring works by Lese Corrigan, on view from Nov. 3 - 30, 2008. Corrigan's new series celebrates the views of water and sky from the Charleston area's bridges with a post-impressionistic sensibility and a reverence for nature and life's transitory states.

Corrigan's post-impressionistic/expressionistic work brings to the mind of the viewer of such nineteenth-century icons as Cezanne and Van Gogh. Though under the influence of such greats, she has developed her own stylistic perspectives. This can be seen in her new series Mid-River. With this series she places the viewer looking out from the structural stability of a bridge and into the natural interaction of the water and sky.

By painting the most elemental constituents of water and sky she hopes to capture light and nature in its purest truth and to illustrate the poignancy of electrical ions in creating the vibrations that affect the natural world. According to her vision everything is alive and vibrant with these molecular dances. Her brushstroke by brushstroke approach and her keen interest in color theory all help her capture her vision on canvas.

This approach to painting not only furthers Corrigan's vision of nature, it integrates the symbolic layers of meaning in her show's title Mid-River. Looking up and down the rivers of the immediate Charleston area, finding the middle of the river is a challenge due to the twists and turns of the waterways. As observed by symbolic anthropologist Victor Turner, life consists of periods of the liminal (between states) and rituals which mark the evolution to the next stage of life. The liminal state is the most prolonged state in life's path and it places the individuals as being "neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and the ceremonial." Both seeking the middle of a river and using a bridge as the viewpoint emphasizes the "stage" and "path" as reference by Turner.

Corrigan's work is in private collections around the world and in public collections such as the MUSC Contemporary Collection in the ART, MUSC general collection and the Gibbes Museum of Art Study Collection. Her work has been featured on numerous race posters and the cover of Susan Meyers' Keep and Give Away book of poetry. A native of Charleston, she has been entrenched in the art scene there for twenty years.

Corrigan will be participating in the CFADA (Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association's) Saturday (Nov. 8, 2008) Painting in the Park (Washington Park) as well as be present for the auctioning of that painting during the Charleston Art Auction gala event that evening. The Painting in the Park is free and open to the public. The auction is a ticketed event raising funds for the Charleston County High School Art Departments. Call 843/722-0128 for reservations.

The Corrigan Gallery presents art with a future instilled with intellect. Varied, thoughtful, provoking works are presented in an intimate space for the viewing pleasure of all.
