City of North Charleston in North Charleston, SC, Offers Global Exhibit

The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that an installation component of The Future Is on the Table, a five-year community art collaboration, will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery, in North Charleston, SC, from Nov. 3-30, 2008.

The Future Is on the Table was organized by Charleston artists Gwylene Gallimard and Jean-Marie Mauclet in 2003 with the objective of using the arts to generate discussion about globalization and social justice issues, particularly water and shelter as basic human rights. Fifty-six handmade three-legged stools cut from a single sheet of marine plywood painted with a map of the world were distributed to artists around the globe as a means of inspiration. The result was a diverse array of projects, such as artists-in-residencies, workshops, performances, gift exchanges, and interactive installations, taking place in England, France, India, South Africa, and the US.

The featured installation at the North Charleston City Gallery, previously on exhibit at the Gibbes Museum of Art in downtown Charleston, signifies the culmination of the project. The gallery will exhibit eight carts created to represent the various exhibitions, events, and art projects that have occurred throughout the five-year history of The Future Is on the Table. The carts, which correspond to a specific artist or group of artists who have participated in the collaboration, provide an overview of the project as a whole.
