Wild Goose Gallery Relocates in Goose Creek, SC, and Opens with Works by Aija Sterns and Barrie Hinson

After nine years serving Goose Creek, SC, area art and custom framing customers on College Park Road, Wild Goose Gallery has pulled up stakes and moved to a more central location at 119H North Goose Creek Blvd.

Relocating was a tough decision for gallery owner Julie Henricks. "Moving is always an ordeal, you can't imagine trying to move such a complex array of really fragile supplies, equipment, and framed artwork, even just across town. But it's worth it, we love the new space, which has a very open and inviting feel to it, and even our workshop area has a much more efficient flow. We took the opportunity to bring in some new artsy giftware, added more photo frames and pottery, and the work of a few more local artists. After nine years in one location we had established a pretty solid and loyal client base there, but we think this will open up a whole new world of people who don't regularly pass through the College Park Road area."

The move for the gallery started at the end of July. With the help of friends and family and some hired local teens, the framing workshop and the artwork were painstakingly moved during the hottest weeks of the summer. "It was miserable, but we decided that the safest way to move the art would be in lots of small batches, to prevent breakage, rather than a couple of giant truckloads," recalls Henricks. "This really paid off, the only damage was one chipped frame. Still, in the middle of chaos, the work of art sales and framing had to go on. The frameshop area had to get up and running quickly. We have several large production-type jobs that are always due out in August and September, so we had to hit the ground running, with boxes still stacked up from the front door to the back. Then our regular customers started to find us - it will probably take me a long time to finish unpacking all those boxes!"

Aija Sterns

Now that the gallery is getting settled in at the new location, the gallery has opened a fall/holiday season with a showing of artwork by two local artists, Aija Sterns and Barrie Hinson. The artwork will be on display through Nov. 21, 2008.

Says Henricks, "This artwork will be of particular interest to Goose Creek residents. Aija works in watercolor and gouache, (opaque watercolor) and creates very serene landscapes that you see all around you right here in Goose Creek. We're just not used to slowing down and thinking of the woods and waterways around us in artistic terms, and I think this will be an eye-opener. Barrie, who also used to teach art in Berkeley County schools, works in a variety of media, but her black and white photography is what I especially wanted the people of this community to see. Barrie has taken some very richly textured photographs of the old Charleston Naval Shipyard. So many people here spent their lives working at the shipyard, this is a great tribute to that, but even if you have no interest in what we may think of as industrial images, you will be touched by the beauty of these photographs."
