The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Lucia Bucklin

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, Nature in Infrared, featuring a unique photography exhibit by Lucia Bucklin, on view at the Museum's Nature Art Gallery from Nov. 6-29, 2009.

Bucklin shoots exclusively with infrared film for the serene, dream-like, romantic quality it gives to her images. Her photographs have an ethereal quality due to the ability of the film to record light the eye cannot see. Bucklin calls her photos a "reality of a different kind."

One of Bucklin's favorite subjects to shoot is nature. "I want the viewer to be drawn into the photograph and feel an emotional link to the subject."

Infrared film is a complicated medium to work with, she explains. "You're shooting with a red #25 filter and you need to visualize your image." But the complexity was part of what drew her to work in the medium. "I liked that it was challenging and that not many professionals were doing it."

Bucklin lives and works in Connecticut and many of her images are from her immediate environs. She has won many prestigious awards for her infrared images both domestically and internationally. Her photographs have been featured in numerous exhibits and juried exhibitions throughout the US and Europe and in a number of publications. Her work has been acquired by several private and corporate collectors. Originally trained as a photojournalist, Bucklin switched to fine-art photography specializing in infrared film nearly five years ago.

All of Bucklin's work is hand printed on archival watercolor or velvet fine art paper in signed, numbered, limited editions. She uses only natural lighting, a Canon 35mm camera and Kodak High Speed Infrared Film.
