Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Hosts NC Watercolor Exhibition

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC is presenting the 64th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, on view through Nov. 30, 2009.

This year's juror for the competition and guest artist was Steve Rogers from Ormand Beach, FL. In addition to judging entries, he is conducting a four-day watercolor workshop, which is being held at Sunset River Studio, the gallery's workshop division, also located in Calabash. Rogers is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. He has been recognized nationally. Honors include the top purchase award in the 2006 National Watercolor Society show.

Seventy-five artists have been juried into the 2009 exhibition. After exhibiting at Sunset River Marketplace, the show will travel to the Page Walker Arts & History Center in Cary, NC, and will hang there through December, when it will move to the Hickory Museum of Art, which is the host site for the 2010 Annual Exhibition. It will hang there for six weeks.

Freeman Beard

The top winners included: First Place -Brunswick Electric Member Corp. Award ($1,250) and Hall Digital Printing Award ($500 value) went to Richard Siegel for Running Stream; Second Place - Wilmington Art Association Award ($850) and Hall Digital Printing Award ($250 value) was given to F. Charles Sharpe for Painter's Table II; and Third Place - Waterway Art Association Award ($600) and Hall Digital Printing Award ($125 value) went to Freeman Beard for Firestation 13.

The Watercolor Society of NC, a nonprofit art organization, was founded in 1972. It seeks to promote watermedia throughout the state by elevating the standards, educating artists and involving the public in the arts. The annual statewide juried exhibition was established to recognize and advance the professional and artistic excellence of watermedia in the state.

The 2009 exhibition poster features Desired Haven, a painting of Southport, NC, by artist David Stickel. It will be available for sale at Sunset River Marketplace.
