Voorhees Family
Art Show and Sale Takes Place in Asheville, NC - Nov. 21 &
22, 2009
The 12th Voorhees Family Art Show and Sale will be held on Nov. 21 from 10am to 5pm and Nov. 22 from noon to 5pm at the Ted Voorhees home, 123 Norwood Avenue in Asheville, NC. This weekend show and sale is free and open to the public.
A collection of paintings and artwork by Voorhees family members will be on exhibit and for sale at this unusual event. Meet this extraordinary family of artists known throughout North Carolina and the Southeast.
The arts legacy began with Edwin Voorhees, known for his watercolor seascapes, and was continued through his wife, Mildred and now their children and grandchildren. Mildred, known for her colorful, patterned watercolors and rich oil still-lifes and landscapes, passed away peacefully in 2007. Reproductions of Edwin and Mildred's artwork will be available.
Four of Mildred's six children will be showing their work at this event. Susan, an occupational therapist, works in oils and pastels. Jane, a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, works in watercolor and oils and will also show her line of cards and calendars featuring her watercolor images. David, a professional potter since 1974, makes hand-painted porcelain, wood-fired stoneware and raku-fired pottery. David's wife, Molly Sharp Voorhees, fabricates contemporary jewelry using sterling silver and gold, often including natural beach stones.
Amy Voorhees
David and Molly own Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, where they represent the family's artwork. They are both members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Amy Voorhees from Morehead City, NC, will show her oil paintings. Ted, an Episcopal priest makes memorable walking sticks. Ted's wife, Caren Goldman, author will have her three non-fiction books available. Other family members showing include Ted's son Christopher Voorhees, drawings; cousins Jane Matteson, watercolors; her son Chad Matteson, from San Diego, oil paintings. Extended family member Chad Alice Hagen will exhibit her hand-felted art pieces, broaches and scarves.
