City of North Charleston (SC) Offers Works by Robert Maniscalco

The City of North Charleston will present the exhibit, Faces of the Lowcountry, featuring works by the North Charleston Artist-in-Residence 09/10, Robert Maniscalco, on view from Jan. 4 - 30, 2010, at the North Charleston City Gallery, located in the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, SC.

In this exhibit, Maniscalco will present works in oil and pastel inspired by the people and environment he now calls his home. The pieces range from commissioned portraits on loan from private and public collections, to depictions of common objects found in his whimsical My Backyard series. Since moving to the Lowcountry 5 years ago, Maniscalco has been developing a body of paintings featuring Gullah people set in the natural environment. Some of these works will be featured, as well as a few examples of his plein air work.

Born in Detroit in 1959, Maniscalco is the son of internationally renowned portrait artist Joseph Maniscalco, with whom he apprenticed during the early 1980's. Since that time, his exquisite commissioned portraits and fine art have become part of over 850 distinguished private and public collections throughout North America. Maniscalco is a specialist in expressive realism and a master of light, form, and expression. He currently resides in Charleston, SC.

On Jan. 7, 2010, from 5-7pm, Maniscalco will be conducting a signing for his books, Point of Art and The Fishfly. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Cultural Arts Department is the recipient of the 2000 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for the Arts and receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, SC Arts Commission, and the corporate community.
