Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jan Sasser

Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Water, Woods, and Wild Things II, featuring new offerings in Jan Sasser's ongoing series of oil landscapes and "nature portraits," on view Nov. 5 - 12, 2010.

Patrons and admirers have remarked on the "lifelike" quality and serene beauty of Sasser's scenes. As the title suggests, viewers will be treated to a variety of sights from river, creek, swamp, and forest habitats taken from the Lowcountry as well as Sasser's travels in North Carolina and California. She strives to produce paintings that share her delight in the natural world and encourage viewers to experience, value, and sustain our environment.

Following dual education in both social work and art, Sasser spent over 20 years in human service roles. In 2003, the "time was finally right" in her life to pursue painting full time. Her focus on nature emerged spontaneously from the role of nature in her own life.

As to her style, Sasser remarks, "While I love many styles of painting, realism seems to be my own natural voice. Maybe it's hardwiring. When I open my mouth to sing, I'm a soprano. When I pick up a brush to paint, I'm a realist and I'm happy with that."

Sasser has been a member of Spencer Art Gallery II for several years. She participates as an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild, an associate member of Oil Painters of America, and has appeared in both Charleston's annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit and the 2010 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.
