RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Matt Kelleher, Denise Choppin and Susan Harrell

The RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present A Manifested Life, featuring by Matt Kelleher, Denise Choppin and Susan Harrell, on view from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, 2013. A reception will be held on Nov. 15, from 6-8:30pm.

In 2005, studio potter Matt Kelleher made the decision to leave University teaching and pursue full-time studio work through a three-year residency at Penland School of Crafts. While Kelleher continues to investigate soda-fired tableware, he has broadened his interests to include sculptural vessels, bird inspired forms, and collaborative work with Shoko Teruyama. He consistently pursues the ideas that linger around his pottery, which are often sculptural and beyond the scale of tableware. The process each new idea reveals drives Kelleher forward.

Rather than attempt to recreate faithful representations of the objects or scenes that inspire her, mixed media artist Denise Choppin focuses upon evoking their essential emotional content. Choppin illustrates the notion of vastness and captures the experience of land, water, space, time and light. This current body of work ‘Horizons’ explores that line drawn when the sky meets the earth or water and how it effects our emotions.

Susan Harrell is a self-trained contemporary oil painter who began her work full-time in 2009. She lives in her hometown of Asheboro, among the foothills of central North Carolina. She paints primarily on canvas and wood panels, while also taking on interior and exterior mural projects in a variety of settings.  Harrell paints a high level of detail that is photorealistic in style, intensifying select colors and drawing attention to an amplified spectrum of light and dark. Her work is often inspired by travel and the beauty present in everyday life, combined with subtle reflections on matters of faith and personal discovery.
