Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, Features Art & Design Faculty Exhibition

The Converse College Milliken Art Gallery in Spartanburg, SC, will showcase works by the Art and Design faculty through Dec. 14, 2001. The exhibit represents the following eight artists: Mayo Mac Boggs, Merilyn Fields, Nancy O'Dell-Keim, Frazer Pajak, D. Britten Ping, Teresa Prater, Doug Whittle, and David Zacharias. The annual faculty show represents a diverse group of styles and media.

The Interior Design program is represented in the show by Frazer Pajak's color photographs and Britt Ping's travel sketches. Pajak's photographs are from his travel and work in McCormick County, SC. Featuring Hanoway, the ancestral family home of a friend, they show the structures, the land and especially the light in this part of the state. The images are meant to emphasize the value of the land and of family history.

The ceramic artwork by David Zacharias is an eclectic mix of vessels and small sculptures. The vessels include pieces that look functional, others that function oddly and some that obviously function well. The sculptures are simple forms that represent secure dwellings.

Nancy O'Dell-Keim's oil paintings also explore the concept of dwelling. In her house-shaped canvases she explores interiors and exteriors through a variety of media including wallpaper, wood, paint, and photographs. O'Dell-Keim states "I am also interested in the comparison between house as a structure verses home as an intimate setting. People 'bring to the table' different views of home. The view of home in these works portray a duality, serving as both a haven and a hell."

The September eleventh tragedy is explored in two of the artists' works. In addition to figurative oil paintings, Teresa Prater has included charcoal drawings and artists' books that address the World Trade Towers destruction and the war on Afghanistan. Merilyn Field's series of multi-media drawings depict the stages an art therapy client might follow in processing the events of the New York tragedy. Her stone sculpture is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers.

The construction of a new wing on the Milliken Art Building and the design of a time capsule has led to Mayo Mac Bogg's presentation of a wall relief. Doug Whittle will be exhibiting landscape paintings and photographs.
