Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Donna Phipps Stout & Richard Mayberry

Donna Phipps Stout will be featured in a greatly anticipated solo exhibition at Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, this holiday season. Jerald Melberg Gallery is also pleased to announce a solo exhibition for NC native, Richard Mayberry. Both exhibits will be on view through Jan. 5, 2002.

Stout's lush, romantic still lifes evoke a sense of drama and mystery that has captured the loyalty of countless collectors. Her traditional representations of flowers, fruit, silver and glass vessels, and draped fabrics are unusual in the still life genre in that they do not appear to have been deliberately arranged. Rather, the objects in her paintings seem to be the vestiges of some kind of intimate social gathering that recently took place at her table.

Born in McCracken County, Kentucky, Stout received her BA from Georgetown College and her MFA from Indiana University. She currently makes her home in Winslow, Arkansas. Stout has been represented in over sixty solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe and was honored with a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Working from photographs, Richard Mayberry creates remarkably detailed drawings and prints that attest to his love for complexity. Because every tree, leaf, flower and weed is given his full attention, he works by perfecting just one square inch at a time. Whether building up layers and layers of pencil marks or gouging out lines and shapes with an engraving tool, Mayberry concentrates on producing highly textured, realistic images. For this exhibition, Mayberry has completed the most ambitious drawing of his career: an 8 x 123 inch drawing depicting a 360 degree view of Cape Lookout, NC.

Born in Durham, NC, Mayberry graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a BA degree in visual arts in 1974. Four years later, he received an MFA degree in painting from Queens College in Queens, NY. For the past five years, Mayberry has been Artist-In-Residence for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
