Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Mickey Gault and Susan Phillips

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will features works by Mickey Gault and Susan Phillips in the exhibition, Transit, on view in Artspaces' Upfront Gallery, from Dec. 5 - 27, 2003.

The question of mortality has always been one of profound concern for artists Mickey Gault and Susan Phillips. What does the idea of mortality encompass? In the past year, due to personal struggles, losses, and world events, Gault and Phillips have shared a common journey: that of wayfarers struggling for insights to life's end. The work in Transit reflects this preoccupation. Gault's effigy pots and reliquary pieces reference birds as a symbol of transcendence, and the soul, which might leave the body at the time of death. They are created in white, which in early cultures was the color of death. Phillips has developed a series of stained glass and mixed media urns, as well as a group of fused glass and mixed media collages that contain her uniquely quirky view of the baggage necessary for the final trip.

Mickey Gault

An Artspace artist since 1988, Gault has worked in both clay and mixed media to create sculptures and paintings dealing with her personal iconography. Her work deals with the mythical and archetypal symbols that reside in her personal history as well as the story of all peoples. Gault has exhibited her art throughout the United States. She has won numerous awards and has twice been selected as one of the top ten art exhibitions in the triangle.

Susan Phillips

Phillips has worked in stained glass and mixed media for more than 20 years, specializing in quirky dioramas and constructions - many with a political theme. She was one of the original group of Artspace tenant artists. Since 2000, Phillips has maintained a studio in Apex, NC, and also has been working in new media.
