City Art in Columbia, SC, Features Exhibit of Small Works of Art

Throughout the holiday season, City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will feature small works of art, all created in 2003 by artists in the gallery's stable of fifty established and emerging artists. The premise of The Portable Affordable Small Gift of Art rests in the artistic possibilities of smaller dimensions, and of course, the joy of giving original art. Several artists have created special works for the holiday season and in many cases working smaller than their usual creative productions.

Feautured works include Walt Simpson's assortment of stylized neighborhoods and colorful humble bungalows painted on wooden siding, Scotty Peek's smaller works from his her/my family series, Bruce Nellsmith's smaller pieces from his Charleston Harbor series, and Ann Hubbard's oil on wood Site Series. Painter Angela Bradburn has contributed smaller works in both watercolor and oil on canvas to the exhibit. Michael Cassidy, whose large landscape work was featured in the recent Now at City Art exhibit, will offer small monotypes.

City Art will also highlight its fine art photographers with new smaller work. Rebecca Rhees has created individual tintypes for this themed event, including evocative images of a butterfly, a doll's head, and an antique puppet. Like Rhees, Julia Cart works with traditional photographic methods, often depicting images from the local natural and manmade landscape. Her works here include both platinum prints and high quality digital prints that still render the light originally captured in her large format cameras. Also Diane Hopkins-Hughs continues her signature method of combining colored pencil with traditional darkroom photography with a new series based on coastal imagery. Robin Smith will offer many new works inspired by the local landscape, and Ed Shmunes has created new, thought-provoking (and often humorous) images based on his recent trips to Spain and Italy.

The gallery's eclectic and often whimsical Small Works Gallery will be supplemented with new work by ceramic artists Penny Pierson and Amy Goldstein-Rice, along with glass artist (and an artist new to the gallery) Kelly Biggs. One Christmas tree will be festooned with glass ornaments made by the artisans of Twin Studio.

In addition to the featured exhibit, A Tarleton Blackwell Christmas, highlights artwork seldom seen in any of the celebrated artist's one-person shows.

In addition, City Art Gallery is proud to represent North Carolina-based sculptor Bill Brown. Several of Brown's finely crafted steel sculptures take center stage in the Main Gallery.

All artwork from The Portable Affordable Small Gift of Art will be made immediately available upon purchase. The exhibit continues through Jan. 10, 2004.
