Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Joanne Evans

The Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, New Works, featuring paintings by Joanne Evans, on view through Dec. 31, 2003.

As a child, the winters in northern Minnesota were, in large measure, responsible for Evans' interest and personal development in art. At -40 degrees, she found painting to be a wonderful and creative alternative to frozen fingers and frost bitten cheeks. During the long winter blizzards, she could loose herself for hours in her art.

Years later, having graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Art from Missouri University, Evans was teaching second grade when a change in personnel at the school suddenly created an art teacher position. "I accepted. For several years I taught K- 12 art and rediscovered my childhood romance with drawing, painting and art in general," said Evans.

In 1990, Evans became a full time artist. After several years as a watercolorist she moved back to her childhood love of oils. Also, as in her childhood, Evans' favorite subjects were animals and flowers. Her study and rendering of animals are always intended to capture the essence, the feeling, the true personalities of each of God's wonderful creatures.

Flowers, Evans' other passion, are also a response to her childhood. "We waited so long after each winter for the crocus and the daffodils and the iris and the daisies to push through the frozen earth and to blossom in wild profusion," said Evans. "Today I grow my own garden in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Brevard, NC. My own daisies and iris and daffodils now push up every season and I paint them as fast as they blossom."

With working studios in the North Carolina mountains and Charleston, Evans' work is often representation of both locations.
