Amba Studios in Columbia, SC, Features Fiber Exhibition

Artists Alicia Leeke, Barbara Bryan, Britta Cruz and Donnie Floyd present the exhibit, Common Thread, a dramatic "new spin" on a medium that brings fiber art into vogue as the hot new item to wear this holiday season at Amba Studios in Columbia, SC. The exhibit will be on view from Dec. 9 - Jan. 9, 2006.

In addition to wearable art, the exhibit will include many items - multi-functional that can be used to adorn walls or add warmth to a chair by the fire. From sculpture to wall hangings visitors will see how these artists have been working to elevate fiber to a fine art medium.

Barbara Bryan, a Columbia native, has a long lasting relationship with fiber arts through the John C. Campbell Folk School. She has studied under Chad Alice Hagen among others and specially enjoys felting. She has been an avid knitter since childhood and explores fibers in a variety of different ways.

Through a collection of batik and hand-painted scarves and wall hangings, Alicia Leeke strives to transform images from her paintings on canvas, with their black, bold lines; into softer white lines on silk. Gentle distortions of linear perspective flow from one color to the next blending skies into oceans and oceans into buildings to create quaint streetscapes and nature scenes.

Britta Cruz, a native of Munich, Germany has lived in Spain and North Africa before coming to Columbia in 1992. She has had a life long love affair with knitting and after a trip to her native Europe last year, started exploring fiber as an artisitic expression. A newly acquired spinning wheel led to one of a kind colorful yarns from a variety of exotic materials. Felted additions and unorthodox methods create unusual textures and forms. Currently she is negotiating with Linda Morse of String Yarns in New York for exclusive distribution of her creations.

Donnie Floyd, currently a Sumter SC resident visited the Savannah School of Art and Design. His involvement in the arts is wide faceted. This show will be the first time however that he is exhibiting his own work.
