Modernisme, The Gallery at Avondale in Charleston, SC, Offers First Group Exhibition

Starving for contemporary art? Take a step across the river to the "hot spot" off the Charleston peninsula known as Avondale Point. A new contemporary art gallery has emerged and Charleston's art community responded in droves. Modernisme, The Gallery at Avondale represents eight local and four national contemporary artists and features paintings, fine art photography, sculpture, and hand crafted furniture.

Modernisme will host exhibitions 6 times a year. The first group exhibition is slated for Dec. 9 through Jan. 6, 2007, and is entitled The Little Things. The exhibit is a showcase of over 100 affordably-priced small art pieces, perfect additions to growing art collections or great gifts for the holidays. This unique exhibit includes works by both the recognized as well as the emerging artist. Works from all mediums are represented and priced from $75 - $750.

"The vision for the gallery is to offer Charleston residents a real contemporary gallery offering fine art that is fresh, edgy and world class," states owner Kristy Cifuentes. Cifuentes made her personal vision a reality as Modernisme opened its doors on Sept. 9, 2006.

As the director for a gallery downtown, Cifuentes stated she noticed so many contemporary artists with no place to exhibit their work. "There were talented artists in our own town with no wall to call home," stated Cifuentes. A number of the gallery's artists are "young" in the sense they haven't emerged into the national market offering art enthusiasts an opportunity to purchase original art without breaking the bank. Prices range from $275 to $4000.

The name "Modernisme" (pronounced modern-iz-may) refers to a Catalan cultural movement led by deeply individualistic and anti-traditionalist intellectuals who attempted to update Catalan arts to be more on par with other European cultures. A modernizing transformation so to speak.

"Modernisme is a bit of a first. It is the only true contemporary art gallery in the area and should serve as a destination for art enthusiasts from all over Charleston," as quoted in the Sept. 06 issue of West Of Newspaper.

Modernisme, The Gallery at Avondale is located in the popular West Ashley section of Charleston, commonly referred to as Avondale Point. Avondale Point has ample parking and is situated directly next door to Al Di La at 21 Magnolia Road off Highway 17.
