Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, Offers New Exhibitions

The Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, is offering several new exhibitions including: BIG, little, and Measure of All Things: The Human Scale.

BIG, an exhibit presenting large scale works of almost epic proportion will be on view through Apr. 6, 2008. In fact two of the works on display were created on site by the artists: a 40' x 27' room installation and a 30' long painting.

The exhibiting artists in BIG hail from the three coasts of the United States - the Gulf, East and West Coasts. A range of mediums were employed - inflatable sculpture by Sharon Englestein of Houston, TX; an epic Western panorama by John Cerney of Salinas, CA - only the second time this work has been exhibited in the US; a massive 30 foot wide painting by Mark Flood, (also of Houston) based upon a Paleolithic fertility idol; heroic hors d'ouevres and smoldering cigarettes by Paul Kittelson; and a kinetic robotic sculpture by Erid Rudd of the East coast.

An entire museum wall was reconstructed for the exhibit, little, on view through Mar. 9, 2008. Curated by CAM staff member Bob Unchester, with installation design and fabrication by his colleague David Peters - the exhibition includes works rendered in miniature scale that are both contemporary and traditional in subject matter within a variety of styles and mediums including: diminutive crafts of clay and basketry; tiny illuminated manuscripts and paintings; folk art microcosms created from foam, toothpicks, and toys; amazing sculptures of glass, stone and resin. The entire 51-foot display case in the museum's Galleria is filled with Tiffany-like windows, providing each work with its own miniature "gallery" space.

Nine galleries devoted to Measure of All Things: The Human Scale, on view through April 6, 2008, include over 50 works from the museum's collection, as well as important loans from the Weatherspoon Art Museum, individual artists and collectors.

The first of the exhibition's galleries is devoted to ethnographic works (Oceanic and African), guest curated by collector and dealer Charles Jones of Wilmington. The gallery features beautiful works from various collections representing Dogon, Yoruba, Ishan and other peoples, juxtaposed with photographs of contemporary people from these regions taken by UNCW faculty artist, Carlton Wilkinson.

Other galleries are filled with self portraits, portraits, media installation, figural sculptures, figures and faces from visions, dreams and mythology.
