Spencer Galleries in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Deborah Palmer

The Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC is pleased to present All That's Chaz, an exhibition of new oil paintings exploring the landscape of Charleston and its environs by Deborah Palmer, on view from Dec. 14 - 21, 2007.

Among iconic Charleston landmarks, Palmer, once again, finds ungentrified pockets of the urban landscape and endangered corners of Sullivan's Island with a fresh eye for light and shadow on centuries-old buildings. The show is broad, encompassing live oaks, harbor views and the marsh that surrounds the city. Most of these paintings were done on location, en plein air. You'll also find Palmer's very first nocturne inspired from a plein air oil sketch and photographs. "Nocturnes are difficult for me with my graphic art background. My work tends to be hard-edged with a lot of contrast, but nocturnes call for soft edges and subtle variations of dark values. It was a challenge," says Palmer of her work.

With this special exhibition, Palmer begins her fifth year as a regular exhibitor at the Spencer Art Gallery. Since returning to her painting in 2000 after 30 years in the commercial art world, she has become an exhibiting member of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant Artist Guilds and a member of the Artists' Alliance of East Hampton. NY. She paints regularly with the Charleston Outdoor Painters Association (COPA).

Palmer has won numerous awards in juried shows, and has had several pieces commissioned from patrons both in Charleston and the New York area. Her work has been exhibited at Guild Hall in Easthampton, NY, the Art Center in Pelham, NY, the Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, and at the North Charleston City Gallery.
