Art and Light Gallery in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Jonathan Andrews, Hallie Gillett, Emily Jeffords and Michelle Thomas

Art and Light Gallery in Greenville, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Toyland, featuring works by Jonathan Andrews, Hallie Gillett, Emily Jeffords and Michelle Thomas, on view through Dec. 19, 2009.

If you have a love of simple and playful, subtle and sophisticated, this delightful collection is a amalgamation of art that will inspire three generations. One need not have children to enjoy this top notch collection. lighthearted yes, but not for kids only.

Hallie Gillett

Local SCAD graduate and children's book illustrator, Hallie Gillett's  "Wind-up" collection is not only an adventure down her childhood lane, but a reminder of how she defines her life. "My work embodies all the color I define my life by and the toys I paint are just uber-cool mini-toys that make me happy."

Jonathan Andrews

Artist and Bob Jones University professor, Jonathan Andrews re-cycles the past and makes a new history to run alongside the old.  Andrews builds little dwellings for his story-tellers a combination of juxtaposed objects re-used for a beautiful purpose. The mixed-media assemblages are in some cases a collection of slightly altered objects and trinkets pieced together somewhat like a three dimensional puzzle. Combining wood, paper and branches, "my work is a collection of the happy accidents that occasionally result and assist the plans in creating a meaningful yet pageless story."

Emerging artist Michelle Thomas brings a graphic hand to her vivid abstract works of acrylic and ink on canvas. Depicting her keen eye for color and experimentation with shape, contrast and bold design, Thomas' collection is a bright spot for art collectors or holiday shoppers weary of the norm.

And last, but not least Emily Jeffords remarks, "non of these plastic, mass-marketed, boxed toys for me." She portrays and reinvents the toys she loved as a child in her artwork. Each piece is whimsical, yet sophisticated oil paintings and collage pieces full of  motion and texture. "Picture a city made of vivid fabrics, bright lights, where everything shines, that's how I describe my work for Art & Light's Toyland exhibit."
