College of Charleston's School of the Arts Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with Gala

The dean and the faculty of the School of the Art at the College of Charleston in downtown Charleston, SC, cordially invite the community to attend a celebration on Sunday, Feb. 6, in honor of the tenth anniversary of the School of the Arts. These free events and performances will begin at 4:30pm and continue into the evening throughout the Simons Center for the Arts with a gala performance to be presented at 5pm in the Emmett Robinson Theatre.

The gala presentation will feature commentary and performances by the Charleston Pro Musica, the Robert Ivey Ballet, pianist Enrique Graf, soprano Deanna McBroom, artist Cliff Peacock, and other representatives of the four departments and two programs in the School of the Arts. Also featured will be an excerpt from Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon as well as a scene from Marlowe's Dr. Faustus. At various locations throughout the Simons Center, students will present dance numbers, comedy sketches, and contemporary one-act plays as well as performances by students of voice and music and exhibits of students works of art. The gala performance will be hosted by Professor Emeritus Arthur McDonald, former chair of the College's original Department of Fine Arts.

The talent and artistry of the students, faculty and staff from each of the departments will be showcased during this special event. At the conclusion of the gala performance, the festivities continue with light refreshments for all, including coffee donated by Starbucks, in the first floor lobby of the Simons Center for the Arts.

The School of the Arts currently houses the Department of Theatre, Music, Studio Art, Art History, and the Arts Management Program and the Historic Preservation/Community Planning Program. It is also the home of the William Halsey Gallery.
