Benedict College in Columbia, SC, Offers Exhibit of Collected Art Works

The Benedict College Fine Arts Gallery, located in the Henry Ponder Fine Arts and Humanities Center at Benedict College, Columbia, SC, will be hosting an exhibition of art from the collections of noted art lovers from the Columbia area. The exhibition, entitled, Columbia Collects: African American Art Collected by the Citizens of Columbia, was curated by Marjorie Hammock, a member of the Benedict College staff and a noted art collector. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 4 - 27.

Columbia Collects will feature the original prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures of some of the most important African American artists of the last 50 years. Most of the artists in the exhibition are documented in numerous books on the history of African American art. From the monumental shadows of Romere Bearden, Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence and Norman Lewis to the cooling shade of contemporary giants John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Al Hollingsworth, John Wilson, Arthur Rose, and Leo Twiggs, the exhibition chronicles the incredible contributions of African American artists to contemporary American art and culture.

The purpose of the exhibit is two-fold. Firstly, to showcase the work of African American artists whose work provides accurate images of the African journey, the pain of oppression, the majestic survival in America and the beauty of the culture. Secondly, the exhibition will provide the community with the opportunity to view the works of some of the signal African American artists of this era and those artists, some with South Carolina roots, who are currently producing art of incredible power and beauty. The exhibit will also document the significance of the collectable, how it was acquired, why it is important to the current owner and the history of its acquisition.

A partial list of collectors who provided works for this exhibition is: Dianne Johnson, Wm Rooef and Elaine Waddell, Franchot Brown, Perry Palmer, Harriet Green, Majorie Hammock, Napoleon Jones Henderson, Grace and Johnnie McFadden, Melvin and Sylvia Mahon, Joe Pinner, Benedict College, Judy and Luther Battiste, Jimmy and Cynthia Hardy, Beverly Simmons, Casandra Rush, Carolyn Sawyer, Carol Dargan, Arlene Anderson, Brandolyn Pinkston, and Tyrone Geter.
