Charleston's City Gallery Presents Exhibit of Clay & Welded Steel

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of clay and welded steel by local artists Cathie M. Murdaugh and John D. Donehue, Jr. from Feb. 2 through Mar. 6.

Cathie M. Murdaugh

Cathie M. Murdaugh knew at an early age that she wanted to be an artist. While attending Winthrop College, in Rock Hill, SC, she majored in art and had a chance to work with different sculpture media including clay. After graduating from Winthrop she became an art teacher and learned how to fire her first kiln as Middleton High School's first art teacher. She is the artist-in-residence for North Charleston as well as an artist-in-education for South Carolina.

Murdaugh comments on her work: "My greatest joy in ceramics comes from handbuilding. Textures created by waves of water or wind on the sand, rivers cutting through rock, and tidal marshlands inspires me. Many of my pieces have little or no glaze and are rubbed with polished stone or soft chamois to a reflective surface. Eroding monoliths as well as winding mountain roads and planted fields are frequent subjects of mine."

John D. Donehue, Jr.

John D. Donehue, Jr. was born in Charleston, SC, in 1970, and has lived in South Carolina for most of his life. A 1989 graduate of Wando High School, he attended Savannah College of Art and Design, completing courses in illustration, fiber arts, painting, three-dimensional design, and graphic design. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design in 1994.

Donehue comments on his work "I thrive on the process, the thinking and the randomness within the process that goes into making things. My work involves ideas that we are all familiar with but also sparks our imaginations into other directions. Although one idea may influence the other, nothing is ever the same. It is important to me to have a cohesive body of work, while keeping each piece as unique as possible."
