The Florence Museum in Florence, SC, Offers New Exhibits

Three new exhibits will fill the galleries of the Florence Museum in Florence, SC, in Feb. and Mar. Within an Echo: Impressions of the Orient, featuring ceramics by Douglas Gray is an exhibit inspired by Japanese, Chinese and Korean objects from the permanent collection of the museum. Collected Images, photographs by Gregorio Binuya are taken from all over the world. The South Carolina Watercolor Society 2000 Awards Traveling Show will also be in the gallery during the month of Mar.

Assistant Professor of Art at Francis Marion University, Douglas Gray comes by way of Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas. As a student at the University of Louisville, he studied Japanese clay throwing and hand building methods. He has used his inspiration from the jades, porcelains, woodcarvings, and even the samurai armor exhibited in the Asian Rooms at the museum to create modern pieces that evoke the same spirit. His artwork has been exhibited in juried and invitational exhibitions across the nation and has appeared in several periodicals. Recently his works have been included in the Southern Living House at Brookgreen Gardens.

Gregorio Binuya grew up in Florence, has been away, and now has returned. The images on exhibit are captured during his travels around the world including Italy, Slovenija, Croatia and New York. Each photograph portrays life as an extraordinary bit to be savored in the moment.

The South Carolina Watercolor Society Traveling Show is an annual favorite at the Florence Museum. The exhibit is a compilation of all the award winners from the 2000 show. Watercolorists from all over South Carolina enter works in this highly regarded competition. Watercolor is not what it used to be. The visitor will find a mix of different media in a huge variety of styles and subjects.
