McKissick To Feature Greenwood Artist's Woodwork

The artistic woodwork of Greenwood native Gerald Dorn, whose creations include six hollow wooden urns with portraits etched into the sides, will be on exhibit at the University of South Carolinas McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, Feb. 4 - Mar. 11.

The collection of more than 40 objects includes sculpted, turned and natural styles on cherry, mesquite, maple, cypress and several other wood varieties. The exhibit is located on the second floor of the museum.

Amid the exhibit is Distinguished Citizens of Greenwood County, a collection of six of Greenwood's most famous citizens' likenesses carved into six separate vessels that are 14 inches tall and 10 inches in diameter. Among the six are John W. Drummond, state senator; Benjamin E. Mays, former president of Morehouse College; and William Jennings Bryan Dorn, former U.S. congressman.

The artist is a 1952 graduate of the University of North Carolina. After a stint in the Navy and a tour of duty in Vietnam, he earned his MBA from Pepperdine University in 1972 and a master's degree in public administration from USC in 1974.

After its time at McKissick, the exhibit will be donated to the Greenwood Museum for permanent placement.
