February Issue 2001

W. H. Moring, Jr. Arts Center in Asheboro, NC, Features Works from "Common Visions"

CommonVisions, a photography project exploring unity in diversity, will hold its first public showing of photographs Feb. 5 through Feb. 28 at the Moring Arts Center in Asheboro, NC.

The goal of CommonVisions is to utilize the powerful art of the photographic image to create greater understanding and increase dialogue in an effort to overcome racial and cultural barriers and create unity. Twenty-five ethnically and culturally diverse participants have been meeting for the last five months to dialogue on the difficult issue that separate racial and cultural groups in Randolph County. The catalyst for their
discussions has been the over 2000 photographs they have taken based on assigned themes and shot with single-use cameras. They have worked together to select the final 60-70 photographs for the show which will be accompanied by captions and journal entries.

CommonVisions plans to offer the photographs for display around the county and, upon invitation, to send representatives of the group to share the images and talk about the project.

Common Visions photographers have backgrounds from Panama, Laos, Spain, Mexico, Philippines, and the Randolph County area. They are African, European, Latino, Asian, and Native Americans ranging from middle school to retirement age.

Two dialogues will be offered. The first will be Feb. 5 at 7pm with the photographers, followed by refreshments. The second dialogue with the CommonVisions photographers will be offered at the gallery on Feb. 19, at 7pm.

The year-long project is sponsored by the Randolph Arts Guild and is supported by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds "Race Will Not Divide Us" Initiative. Chuck Egerton, Randolph Community College Photography Instructor, is the project director. The group's second photography exhibit is scheduled for early summer 2001.
