Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC, Presents Student Art Show

The Brookgreen Student Art Show, featuring 58 works in a variety of media, can be viewed daily through Feb. 24 in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion at the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden at Brookgreen Gardens in Pawleys Island, SC.

The groupings of two-and three-dimensional works were created by 32 participants in Brookgreen's fall studio art classes. Represented are sculpture, Chinese brush painting, portraiture and watercolors.

The following awards were given at last week's opening: First Place, Two-Dimensional Work to Alyce LaFlam for Plunging Waterfall; Second Place, Two-Dimensional Work to Dawn Chase for Summer Bamboo; First Place, Three-Dimensional Work to Ina Ruth Ellis for Myrtle; Second Place, Three-Dimensional Work to Vickie Comer for For Richer or Poorer; Curator's Award (for talent and innovation) to Elizabeth Garlock for The Queen.

"This exhibit is an amazing grouping that offers something for everyone's taste in art.," said Robin Salmon, curator of sculpture. "These artists, some of whom are beginners in their craft, have created most interesting pieces."

Teachers of the art classes included Margo Mohan, Jefri Chandler, Grace Krueger and Ernest Schaefer; sculpture; Joan Howard, Sumi-E Chinese brush painting; Mary O'Brien, watercolors; Bob Johnston, portraiture; and Kathy Patrick, children's art.

The Archer and Anna Hyatt Sculpture Garden at Brookgreen Gardens, located on US 17 between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina, is the country's first sculpture garden where more than 550 works of American sculpture are displayed throughout one of the greatest public gardens in the Southeast.

Plans are being readied for the March 9 opening of the E. Craig Wall, Jr. Lowcountry Center, a renovated facility that will add to the visitor's experience with new programs, a major exhibit describing the Lowcountry's unique history and culture, special garden displays and daily excursions.

Brookgreen Gardens is one of only 12 institutions in the country accredited by both the American Association of Museums and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, as well as a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
