French Quarter Art Galleries in Charleston, SC, Open Their Doors to Show Art with a Heart

The French Quarter Gallery Association will host a special charitable Art Walk on Fri., Mar. 1 from 5-8pm. The focus of the March Art Walk is Art with a Heart. In reaction to the hard hits that non-profits have had to endure as a result of the past year, each gallery is choosing to represent a non-profit organization. Information on the organization will be available in the hosting gallery along with an opportunity to make a contribution to the non-profit organization. A range of needy non-profit organizations will be represented including such causes as Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy and Lowcountry Children's Center.

During the Art Walk, 29 French Quarter galleries and the Gibbes Museum of Art will open their doors to the public. Admission to the Gibbes Museum of Art will be free. Paticipants will be able to visit the galleries, meet artists and catch a demonstration or docent lead tour at the Gibbes Museum of Art. In addition, some galleries will offer refreshments.

The French Quarter District of Charleston was established in the 18th century with the settlement of the French Huguenots. The Art Walks in this area first began to take shape in 1990 with nine galleries participating at that time. As the Walk grew in popularity, the tradition was established that the area French Quarter galleries would host three Art Walks a year, the first Friday in May, Oct., and Dec. (with a charitable event in Mar.). The French Quarter includes galleries along East Bay, Church, Meeting, Queen, Chalmers, Broad, and Tradd Streets as well as the Gibbes Museum of Art. This four-block district can easily be covered in a single Art Walk.
