Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by James L. Palmer, Jr. and Marc Epstein

The Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition entitled, Untamed Lowcountry, featuring works by James L. Palmer, Jr. and Marc Epstein, which will be on view from Feb. 1 - 28, 2002. "Untamed Lowcountry" features photographs, sculptures, and paintings of the lowcountry wilds, including denizens and places.

The exhibit will feature sculptures by James L. Palmer Jr., a wildlife sculptor and carver for over 25 years. Palmer creates painted steel sculptures ideal for porches and gardens and solid pewter miniature reproductions of his original wood carvings as well as copper fountains with floral motifs. Many of Palmer's miniatures are signed limited editions.

"The fine detail in Palmer's miniatures and other works is evidence of his attention to detail and his love of wildlife." says Jerry Spencer, gallery owner. " With his father, James Palmer Sr., James Palmer Jr. was among the first sculptors exhibited in the early years of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, held in Charleston annually during the month of Feb. His work is affordable and striking and continues to be very popular."

Palmer became the world's first underwater sculptor in 1985, creating art beneath the surface of lakes, rivers, and bays from South Carolina to Alaska. Still on view at various sites, Palmer's work attracted national attention, recognition, and corporate sponsorships.

"Marc Epstein has been a photographer for over 30 years." Spencer says. "He spends literally hours in swamps and insect-infested areas, using camouflaged blinds and his extensive knowledge of animal and bird behavior to capture his unique images."

"Marc is a professionally certified Marine Biologist who has published over 30 scientific articles and abstracts on fish and wildlife ecology." Spencer continues. "His unique background, experience, and work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service provide him the expertise and opportunities to capture wonderful images. For example, one of his photo credits is a first-ever-published photo and article of a very tiny and rare flower called a Pigmy Pipe. It was the first time the plant had been seen in over 100 years."

The photographs of Epstein have appeared in Cape Cod Life, South Carolina Wildlife, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Ducks Unlimited, Birders World, Florida Sportsman, Salt Walter Sportsman, Sport Fishing, and Audubon, as well as professional fish and wildlife journals, and hundreds of books and calendars.

In addition to the exhibit by Palmer and Epstein, paintings and prints of lowcountry marsh scenes, rivers, bays, etc. by other gallery artists will be on display throughout the month.
