The Hilton Head Art League in Hilton Head, SC, Features Works by Ellen Huey

The Hilton Head Art League is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Ellen Huey entitled, All About Edges, at the League's Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, from Feb. 18 through Mar. 15, 2003.

Huey's work, which has evolved over many years, may be described as traditional, but with a special edge. In fact, she believes the success of her work revolves completely about her use of edges. Whether it's a floral study, a figurative painting or a bucolic landscape, it's the use of edges that draws the viewer's eye into the painting.

"The edges of the subject are more defined and crisper in the foreground and soften as the image recedes. The play of lost and found edges draws the viewer into the scene," says Huey. There's a certain mystery to the paintings that can only be achieved by the harmony and dynamics of her technique. The end result is definitely over the edge in its creativity and effect on the beholder.

Huey often draws upon subject matter close at hand, such as the beautiful flowers she grows in her own garden, or the face of her granddaughter, who was the inspiration for the painting entitled, "Renaissance Profile". The paintings on display are oils and watercolors. She has also been influenced by her travels to France and Maine, but her selections for this show are totally American country scenes. She is inspired by unspoiled, uncluttered countryside, quaint architecture and the land's natural beauty that she loves to capture in her paintings. An active imagination and scenes remembered also provide material for her paintings.

A resident of Hilton Head for over 20 years, Huey had been a member of the Hilton Head Art League Board of Directors for a number of years, and teaches watercolor painting at Creation Station. Prior to coming to the island, she taught art at the Munce Art Center in Indianapolis. She studied and painted with nationally recognized artists such as Charles Reid, Wolf Kahn and Alex Powers. Currently, Huey's work may also be seen at the Calhoun Street Art Gallery in Bluffton, SC, and regularly at the Art League Gallery.
