February Issue 2003

Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, Features a Group Exhibition Dealing with War

Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, is presenting the exhibition, War - What is it good for?, in the Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery at the Harper Center for the Arts. The exhibition, on view through Feb. 27, 2003, is an international invitational featuring a dynamic group of artists who use war as a concept in their work both as personal experiences and as a means of expression.

Artists included are Ivan Albreht of Serbia, formerly known as Yugoslavia, whose "without title" ceramic installation evokes a somber, tomblike feeling of sadness and loss.

John Filo, American award winning photojournalist, was place at the "right" place at the "wrong" time to witness and begin his photojournalist career by documenting the Kent State University shootings in May 1971.

Sam Fleming of Belfast, Ireland, a painter and printmaker, who has grown up in a country in constant battle, exhibits his intaglio aquatints that present us with spirits from the past.

Chusak Majarone, one of nine children, fled with his family to the United States as refugees from Thailand during the Vietnam War. His manic drawings express horror and fear of the outcome of war.

Lizzie Zucker Saltz & David Zucker Saltz, of the United States, creatively respond to the events of 9/11 with their installation of re-construction.

Educational and historic in reference, as well as showing how artists use their creative abilities and talents to express their sensitivities towards the topic of war - the exhibit is a must see!
