City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Shannon Wood
The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of collage by Mt. Pleasant, SC, artist Shannon Wood, from Feb. 6 through Mar. 5, 2004, entitled Shannon Wood: Recent Work.
Wood is a native of Charleston. She earned her BFA in Graphic Design from The University of Georgia and currently holds a graphic design position at Gil Shuler Graphic Design. Her collages are greatly influenced by her award winning commercial design work. She is currently a key holder at Redux Studios, an organization for emerging and under-represented artists in the Charleston community.
Wood comments on her work: "A graphic designer by profession, I am interested in the relationship between graphic art and fine art. Through collage I combine graphic images with the tactile elements of paint and other materials. I love to see the results I get when combining one with the other. My process begins with finding graphic images that represent the story I want to depict. Many times these stories come from journeys that I have taken in my life, real or fictional. Sometimes I use photographs that I have taken on past trips in order to re-live or remember the experience in some way. Other times I add elements of nature to the collage which force the viewer to notice an object or objects that they might have overlooked in their everyday lives. I decide on color according to the mood of the images and narrative I am trying to portray. By layering the paint and scratching into the surface I allow the underpainting to show and give the work a sense of depth. Sometimes I will sew into the canvas to give the piece a more homemade feel."
