Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, features Works by Kelly Chelena, Suzanne Gernandt, and Sarah Hendershot-Simpson

Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Fiber, Fabric, Paper and Paints, featuring works by Kelly Chelena, Suzanne Gernandt, and Sarah Hendershot-Simpson, from Feb. 5 through Mar. 18, 2005.

Kelly Chelena lives in Hendersonville, NC, with her family. She has moved away from representational work to abstract. Her works are mostly oils on paper, created through layering, scratching, and scraping the paint to rediscover color, texture, and balance. Chelena finds each piece she paints new and exciting every time she sits down. When not exhibiting, she works on commission pieces, does volunteer art projects, and spends time with her family.

Suzanne Gernandt has no formal training in art. She became interested in textiles and started weaving over thirty years ago. Gernandt incorporated dyes into her work, then started painting on her weavings. She then moved to painting on paper and weaving the paper into different textiles.

Originally from Chicago and then Florida, Gernandt lived in California as well with her husband and then three children. They moved to Asheville, NC, 15 years ago; her husband built furniture and she raised the family and did her artwork on the side. As of nine months ago, they moved to Waynesville, NC, and opened a furniture and high end arts and crafts store where they sell mostly their own work.

Sarah Hendershot-Simpson grew up amidst the mountains of eastern Tennessee. Attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, she discovered weaving; her love of nature and its' repetitive patterns translated into this art form. Hendershot-Simpson has both a BA and MA in fibers from SCAD. Since graduation in 2002, she has shown in both group and solo exhibits throughout the Southeast. She and her husband Brad, a painter, reside in Tryon, NC.
