Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, Announces Winner of the 2nd Annual Face Off - Jeanette Fourie

Janette Fourie

Jeanette Fourie of Cramerton, NC, won the second annual Face Off portrait-making competition hosted by the Columbia Museum of Art's affiliate membership group, About Face. The event took place on Jan. 21, 2006, from 8am - 4:30pm in the museum's Garden Terrace in Columbia, SC.

Sixteen participating artists ages 18 and older were randomly paired to capture each other's portraits through a medium of their choice. Three judges were on hand at the event to decide which artist from each pairing progressed on to the next round and which one was eliminated from the competition. After four rounds, each lasting one-and-a-half hours in length, Jeanette Fourie was named the "2006 About Face Face Off Winner," after pairing up with runner-up Mark Conrardy of West Columbia, SC. The first- and second-place winners' artworks are currently on display in the museum's Dubose-Poston Reception Hall.

Mark Conrardy

Fourie took home a grand prize of $500, and Conrardy was presented with a $250 gift certificate from City Art, in Columbia, SC, for his second-place status. Ron Chapiesky of Swansea, SC, and Brad Anderson of Irmo, SC, both took home third-place honors and received catalogues from the Columbia Museum of Art's catalogue collection.

The judges for this year's competition were Dr. Todd Herman, chief curator at the museum; Dawn Hunter, assistant professor of studio art from the University of South Carolina; and Warner Wells, artist.

About Face is a group of artists that shares a model in the Columbia Museum of Art's studios. This group offers a supportive and friendly atmosphere in which to hone artistic skills and represents a wide range of ages and abilities. The first visit is free. About Face membership is $15 in addition to museum membership.

The Columbia Museum of Art is South Carolina's premier international art museum with extraordinary collections of European and American fine and decorative art that span centuries. Founded in 1950, the museum opened its new building on Main Street in 1998 by transforming an urban department store to a sleek and airy, light-filled space with 25 galleries. The collections include masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, works by significant furniture and silver makers, as well as modern and contemporary art from the present time. Of particular interest are Sandro Botticelli's Nativity, Claude Monet's The Seine at Giverny and art glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany.  The museum also offers changing exhibitions from renowned museums and educational programs that include group and public tours, lectures, films, and concert series.
