Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Offers New Works by Marcus McClanahan

New works by North Carolina artist Marcus McClanahan are being featured at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC. The show, entitled, I Long For the Sea, includes about a dozen new paintings, most of which depict boats in a range of settings - on the water, at a marina, in dry dock, etc. The exhibit will be on view through Feb. 25, 2006.

McClanahan, who works in both oil and acrylic prefers the medium of oil because it allows him to achieve depths not possible with other media. The artist, who studied commercial art before he began his career in fine art paints seascapes, landscapes, portraits and more. He says, "I don't say the subject is not important, but what inspires me to paint is how the light and shapes interact. there is great strength in shape, line and color. It virtually forces the painting out of me."

McClanahan adds, "To me water is a mystery. It's power, it's texture and flow. It's ironic that I am very interested in movement in my work, yet at the same time can get very motion sick."

Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, in a telephone interview, "Our customers really respond to Marcus' work. Its texture . . . its sinuous flow of shape, of form . . . is very appealing to collectors."

Besides painting, McClanahan also holds workshops in which other artists learn his methods of creating shapes first and objects second. He is one of the artists already booked later this year at Sunset River Studio, the gallery's new workshop and rental space facility, which is set to begin operation in February.
