Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Joyce and Don Nagel

The Art League of Hilton Head will present Kaleidoscope, an exhibit of color, mood, experience and expertise in the showing of pastel paintings by the husband and wife team of Joyce and Don Nagel at the Art League Gallery of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 13 through Mar. 10, 2007.

Don Nagel

Joyce and Don met in art school and have shared a life in the arts ever since. After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology they began careers in the Pittsburgh, PA, area and moved to Detroit, MI, where Don worked for an advertising agency and Joyce resumed her art career after some time off to raise a family. She taught art and did free-lance design work. Both obtained a Master's degree in print making from Wayne State University by attending night classes. Among the accounts Don worked on as associate group creative director were General Motors corporate, Mr. Goodwrench, Pontiac and Dow Chemical.

Joyce Nagel

After moving to Hilton Head Island in 1986, Joyce began teaching art on the island and exhibiting her work at the Tatler Gallery. And, when Don retired in 1999, he too, began teaching and producing fine art paintings in pastels. Their approaches to art and subject matter may be different, but for more the 50 years, their ever-changing palette of images and colors that they've experienced and shared over the years are reflected in the kaleidoscope of paintings at the Art League Gallery. Though Joyce also paints in oils, the preferred medium for both artists is pastel.

Both Joyce and Don have received numerous awards for their work at various stages in their fine arts careers. They are members of Excellence in the Southeastern Pastel Society and Joyce is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. Their work can be seen at the Mary Bell Galleries of Chicago, the Morris & Whiteside Red Piano Art Gallery and the Art League Gallery of Hilton Head.

"Our love for each other, and our mutual affinity for art, have made our lives over the past 50 years a kaleidoscope of experiences and images," says Don Nagel. "We are so excited by this opportunity to share our love with you through our artwork," says Joyce. "Our artwork tells the story of our lives," they both agree.
