February Issue 2008

Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden, SC, Offers Works by Robert Urban

Robert Urban, an artist from Spartanburg County, SC, will be exhibiting a one-man show of his recent mixed media paintings in the Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) in Camden, SC. The exhibit, titled Hidden Treasures, will on display from Feb. 5 - 29, 2008.

This show marks the artist's first time exhibiting in Camden and will be the artist's first art exhibit of 2008. The title of Urban's exhibit, Hidden Treasures, is a reference to the artist's interest in scenic natural settings that are often under appreciated by the public at large. Several of the artworks in the show directly depict and reference Goodale State Park in Kershaw County, a park the artist visited for the first time last summer.

The show's title also refers to Urban's artworks themselves; they build up over time through many thin layers of acrylic paint.  Words, phrases, and objects are often partially obscured from view, thereby becoming "hidden". In his paintings, Urban will rub, scrape and sand away the surface to reveal layers underneath.

"By creating an image and then destroying all or part of it, my art mimics what happens in our natural environment, either directly or indirectly through human interaction," said Urban. "My art certainly reflects some of my environmental concerns for our world, although I don't think it does so in a didactic way." In addition to his paintings, Urban will be exhibiting a few of his photographic works.

Urban has exhibited his artwork throughout the Carolinas, including City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, MG Fine Art in Asheville, NC, and Daly Designs Gallery in Greenville, SC.  His artwork was recently selected for publication in Art Buzz, The 2008 Collection, the first annual edition of a coffee table book to be distributed internationally. The South Carolina Art Education Association awarded South Carolina Secondary Art Teacher of the Year last fall to the artist. Urban is a graduate of the art department of the University of South Carolina.
