Lime Blue in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jim Innes

Jeff Kopish, owner of Lime Blue in Charleston, SC, announces a solo show of new work by Jim Innes, On Top of my World, which will be on view from Feb. 1 through Mar. 4, 2008. This show of monotypes was produced within the past year and represents the work of one of Charleston's most accomplished printmakers.

Innes, holder of the MFA from Kansas City Art Institute, studied printmaking at the former Print Studio South and at numerous workshops in the US and Canada. He wrote the first manual on polyester plate lithography and continues to study and modify a variety of printmaking methods. His most recent work includes explorations with Akua water-soluble ink and automaticism, a method of tapping the unconscious.

A monotype is a true print medium but unlike other prints, only one image is produced rather than an edition. Frequently abstract and sometimes figurative, each of the monotypes is the result of repeated runs through an etching press. "The beauty of the monotype for me is the immediacy and flexibility of the medium," Innes says.

Lime Blue, one of Charleston's unique art spaces, is dedicated to all of the visual arts without creating a distinction between craft and "fine" art.  When selecting work, Jeff Kopish requires that the artwork be hand-made and unique. The prints he has chosen for this show fit with that concept particularly well.  Their bright colors and bold shapes convey a wide range of playful fantasy and humor, a departure from what is typically on display in and around Charleston.

Although the prints in this show build on the techniques Innes has acquired and perfected, the subject matter is a change from his earlier shows. "My dark paintings and prints are a thing of the past for now. I am much more concerned with pattern and decoration and often humor. Monotypes seem to be a natural medium for this lighter fare."
