February Issue 2009

Artist Guild Gallery of Greenville in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Katie Coston

The Artist Guild Gallery of Greenville in Greenville, SC, will present an exhibit of ceramic works by guest artist, Katie Coston, on view from Feb. 6 - 28, 2009.

Coston was inspired to imitate the textures seen in the world around her. Many of her works are an attempt to transcribe the visual and actual textures of nature to her forms. Thus, a raku firing or the addition of elements taken directly from nature are a means to that end. These components furnish the works with a natural, earthy quality that is appealing to her. Coston feels, clay is earth - wedding earth with earth seems only natural.

Many of Coston's pieces are functional, although some pieces are meant not to be functional, but visually pleasing and also to convey a message.

Coston has been an artist even as a child.  She remembers digging in the clay from her yard and making tiny vessels. She says she would let them dry in the sun and carefully paint them. This desire stayed with her and only grew over the years.

Coston achieved an MA in Three Dimensional Studio Art in 2008. She feels that creating in order to express a specific message can be valid and that God created with a message in mind. God's work, which we call nature, is hung in this earthly gallery to remind us on Himself. Coston has set up house in starting Illyria Pottery in Greenville, and has loved the freedom to create and continue on her journey.

The Artists Guild Gallery of Greenville is a co-operative gallery located in the heart of downtown Greenville. Eighteen local artists are represented in the gallery along with various mediums including acrylic, mixed media, oil and watercolor paintings, jewelry, glass, woodwork and sculpture. One or more of the artists is in the gallery at all times, demonstrating throughout the day and always ready to discuss their art with visitors.
