Art With Heart Art Auction Takes Place in Charlotte, NC, Feb. 7, 2009

The ninth annual Art With Heart art auction, which raises funds for United Family Services' domestic violence programs, is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2009, at CenterStage@NoDa in Charlotte, NC, at 6:30pm. NEWSCHANNEL 36 Morning Anchors Colleen Odegaard and Jeff Campbell host the evening which includes silent and live auctions featuring art from many of the region's most notable artists. Joan and Robert Zimmerman serve as Honorary Chairs and Mark Pierman, moonlighting from his day job as president and CEO of United Family Services, will preside over the live auction as auctioneer.  

This year's featured artists are Thomas McNickle and Brian Rutenberg. McNickle and Rutenberg headline the event and a painting by each artist has been donated to the auction by Jerald Melberg Gallery. Their work is joined by 30 other original works of art in the live auction and over 200 works of art in the silent auction. Art With Heart Emerging Artists Competition winner Sharon Justice and runner-up Chrys Rivier-Blalock have also donated artwork. 

Other artists and donors represented in the auction include Andy Braitman, Loren DiBenedetto, Hal Dedmond, Sharon Dowell, Chas Fagon, Tony Griffin, Corine Guseman, Heidi Kirschner, Ruth Ava Lyons, Jane Pope, Jane Schmidt, Hat Thompson, Charles Walker, Joanna Wardell and Murray Whisnant. The artwork to be auctioned includes paintings, pottery, sculpture, jewelry and photographs and ranges in value from $40-$4,000.  

Among the many highlights of the auction include two works of art from nationally recognized Native American artists Felice Lucero-Giaccardo and Joe Baker, a hand sculpted Adirondack chair from Nathan Rose and pottery from the renowned Seagrove potters Ben Owens III, Phil Morgan, Original Owens Pottery, Donna Craven & Bulldog Pottery. 

A raffle drawing, featuring a sculptural hanging by Emily Wilson donated by the Jerald Melberg Gallery, is scheduled following the silent auction. Raffle tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the auction.  Also, artist Holt McLean, represented by Green Rice Gallery, will create an on-site painting depicting the event. McLean's work will be auctioned off at the end of the evening.

Started in 2000, the annual auction which has raised over $450,000 since its inception when a group of local women decided to combine their extensive resources to plan a benefit to help United Family Services launch programs for victims of domestic violence. Over 50 strong, the Art With Heart volunteer committee is led by Chair Dosty Quarrier and Co-Chair Lesley Shull.

United Family Services, a nonprofit United Way member, is a multi-faceted family service agency. Art With Heart benefits the agency's domestic violence programs including The Shelter for Battered Women and Victim Assistance Court Services. These programs provide safety planning and shelter, counseling and support groups, children's services, substance abuse services, court and legal advocacy, services for incarcerated women, on-site emergency room response to patients, training to medical professionals and dating violence prevention education. For more information visit   (www.unitedfamilyservices.org).
