February Issue 2009

Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Duy Huynh and Diana Fayt

Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique in Charlotte, NC, will celebrate its one-year anniversary with the opening of a solo exhibit by artist and co-owner Duy Huynh. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 19 through Mar. 29, 2009. Pottery by Diana Fayt will also be featured during this exhibit.

With his poetic and contemplative acrylic paintings Huynh creates his own narratives of the human condition, drawing inspiration from a variety of storytellers in formats that range from music and movies to ancient folklore and comic book adventures. His ethereal characters and dreamlike settings create a mood to be explored, a journey to be taken, and another world to get lost in. While much of his work may be deeply personal, his clever and often times humorous use of symbolism and wordplay invites the viewer to create their own storyline.

After graduating with a degree in painting and illustration from UNC Charlotte in 1999, Huynh's main objective was to share his work with the public. He began painting murals and showing his work in a variety of public establishments, including restaurants, coffee shops, bars and music venues. He also explored the performance aspect of painting, oftentimes collaborating with musicians and dancers to create works of art in front of an audience. Over the years several galleries around the country have added Huynh to their roster of emerging artists.

In 2008, Huynh realized a longtime dream as he and partner Sandy Snead opened Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique within the community that originally inspired and supported him. The gallery features his paintings and mixed media sculptures along with a cohesive collection of artwork, pottery, jewelry and more from other independent artists and designers.

Starting with its one-year celebration Lark & Key will be featuring various potters with each exhibit. In keeping with the idea of Huynh's storytelling the first featured potter will be Diana Fayt, a San Francisco based artist/designer. Fayt, a regular contributor to Lark & Key group exhibits, creates ceramic pieces that are often narrative with marks of time, events and images seen and experienced. The images she chooses have meaning and many pieces are stories or combinations of stories, with each element having significance.

Fayt hopes to leave a permanent mark that expresses her vision of what she experiences in the world around her. She incorporates original drawings of birds, whales and other silhouetted icons and freehand illustrations along with unique markings created by found objects and various tools. Her pieces are often irregular in shape, an intentional ode to keeping the evidence of handmade an integral part of her work. Fayt currently exhibits her work in galleries and fine boutiques throughout the United States, Japan, Australia and Europe.
