Davidson College Gallery in Davidson, NC, Will Feature Work of Deidre Prosen

From Mar. 13, through Apr. 21, 2000, Davidson College in Davidson, NC, will present Load Cycle, an exhibition of paintings and assemblages by Deidre Prosen, in the William H. Van Every, Jr. Gallery of the Belk Visual Arts Center.

Prosen creates colorful, bold, narrative paintings that offer a look into the complexities of human nature. Recurring themes of anxiety, selfishness, and greed dominate her intricate compositions. They initially disorient the viewer, and ultimately reveal the underbelly of society through a cast of grotesque characters. Though a nihilistic view of our world permeates much of the work, a sense of humor adds a touch of hope. The relevance of this work lies not only in the examination of ourselves, but in what we may do to better the world around us. Her critical, yet humorous, voice allows us to laugh at the folly of our actions while confronting a world where humanity must seriously question how we will exist in the future.

Prosen earned her masters degree in fine arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1995. She has participated in distinguished residency programs at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Kohler Arts Center in Kohler, WI. She has also studied abroad in Paris with the masters program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Prosen, a visiting professor of art at Davidson, will present a slide show about her work on Mar 15, from 7-8pm in Seamans Lecture Hall of the Visual Arts Center. A reception will immediately follow the presentation. A color brochure accompanies this exhibition, and includes an essay by Richard Kaye, assistant professor of English at Davidson.

From Mar. 14 through May 10, 2000, the Edward M. Smith Gallery in the Visual Arts Center will feature weekly solo exhibitions in a variety of media by Davidson College senior studio art majors. The artists are Lori Beppu, John Dunwoody, Benin Ford, Mark Hanf, Jenny Lyon, Chris Rackley, and Will Ragland. Please contact the gallery for specific exhibition dates.
