Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Work by Tony Hernandez

The Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting their second solo exhibition for Tony Hernandez entitled, King's Blue. The exhibit begins on Mar. 2 and continues through Apr. 15, 2000.

Tony Hernandez was born in 1964 and raised in Atlanta, GA, where he continues to live and work. He paints in encaustic and oil on wood and paper to create stark simplicity consisting of figures adrift in non-existent landscapes. His unusual techniques begins with a blow torch to burn the images into the wood panels. Then the encaustic method is applied by repeatedly mixing pigments with hot bee's wax to fuse color and subtle texture to the wood surfaces of his paintings. The work on panel is smooth and clean, exposing the wood grain beneath the layers of wax and pigment. In comparison, the work on paper is rough and textural with torn edges, staple marks, and noticeable brush strokes from the wax application. The new work has introduced muted colors ranging from dark greens to deep reds, which is a dramatic change since work up to date has only been monochromatic.

Hernandez continues to examine separation, isolation, hope and salvation. Facing the grim social issues in our society, he acknowledges what he sees through his allegories. Hernandez creates his symbolic imagery that functions like language, in which is created through his own personality, memory and experience. Hernandez sees himself "as a symbolist, why try to tell everyone when you can say it simply, like a poem."
