Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC, Features Work of Lynda Benglis

An exhibition by New York sculptor Lynda Benglis will be on view from Mar. 5 through Apr. 23 at Weatherspoon Art Gallery at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Greensboro, NC, as part of the Falk Visiting Artists Program. The exhibition will be in the Tannenbaum Gallery and will include eight works by Benglis dating from 1969 to the present.

The artist will be in residence Mar. 6-8. She will lead a gallery walk-through at 4pm on Monday, Mar. 6 and will present a slide lecture on her work at 5:30pm on Mar. 7. Both events are free to the public.

Benglis gained prominence in the 1970s art world for her foam and latex "pour" pieces, at a time when women artists received scant recognition for their work. Throughout her career, she has extended the forces of nature into creative exercises like folding, squeezing, and carving to create abstract sculptures that have a strong physical presence. During her talks, Benglis will comment in part about her earlier work and feminist interests. Her visit is part of Women's History Month events taking place at UNCG in March.

Each year, the Falk Visiting Artist program brings three nationally recognized artists to UNCG for several days of activities. The program offers an opportunity for students, faculty and the public to have contact with the artists. It also provides a focus for discussion of ideas, trends and standards of artistic production at the national level.

The Herbert and Louise Falk Visiting Artists Endowment was established in 1982 to fund the program. A committee of art department faculty and students and a Weatherspoon Art Gallery curator selects artists each year. Participating artists have included Robert Longo, Laurie Simmons, Peter Agostini, Rackstraw Downes, Nancy Grossman, Grace Hartigan and Mel Chin.

Visitors to the Benglis exhibition can also view In Company: Robert Creeley's Collaborations, a collection of collaborations between poet Robert Creeley and leading contemporary artists, now running through Apr. 23. Also concurrent with the Benglis exhibition will be a showing of some of the best works by seniors in UNCG's Art Studio Program, on display through Apr. 9.
