The Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC, Honors Odyssey Center Instructors

This month, (Mar. 28-31) the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) holds its annual conference in Charlotte, NC. In honor of NCECA's presence in the Tar Heel State, the Southern Highland Craft Guild is highlighting Asheville's vibrant ceramic arts community by showcasing the work of artist residents from Asheville's Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts. Entitled Past & Present: Resident Artists of Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts, this exhibition will be held in the Folk Art Center's Interpretive Gallery from March 24 through June 12.

The Odyssey Center is an Education Center member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, and an educational outreach program of Highwater Clays, one of the largest clay retailers in the Southeast. The two-year residency program is designed for emerging artists to accelerate their artistic and professional development through studio access and a wealth of other resources including workshops, exhibitions, studio sales and interaction with visiting artists.

Visitors can see the work of thirteen Odyssey residents from the program's five-year history. Director Mark Burleson strives to provide diversity in form and style in the Center's educational pursuits. This holistic approach is strengthened by inviting residents with diverse backgrounds. Some residents use handbuilding, others are primarily "throwers" that use the potter's wheel, and some concentrate on tilemaking or sculptural forms. Sculptural artist Jill Allen, a resident from 1999 - 2000, enjoyed the input from other residents of different disciplines in clay. "We were all at a very experimental stage with our work," she remembers. "It was great having fresh viewpoints from people doing something so different." The Center's many programs include outreach to school children of all grades, apprenticeships for young people wanting to gain experience, teaching opportunities for professional ceramicists, and exhibitions in the Odyssey Gallery.
