Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by Jennie Bireline, Sherri Wood, and Ginny Stanford

Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, announces the opening of its two-person exhibit for artists Jennie Bireline and Sherri Wood on view Mar. 18 through Apr. 20. New ceramic pots by Jennie Bireline and recent handmade fabric constructions by artist Sherri Wood will be featured in the South Gallery. In addition, a special West Gallery Side Show will feature new work by nationally recognized artist Ginny Stanford.

An exhibit of new pots by noted NC ceramist Jennie Bireline will be on view. Using both new and traditional methods such as terra-sigillata and gold leaf, Bireline creates gravity defying sculptural vessels.

Bireline has exhibited widely throughout the US, including NC, in juried and invitational exhibits. Included are North Carolina Clay at NCSU; The NCECA Clay National in Philadelphia, PA; The Wichita National, at the Wichita Arts Center, Wichita, KS; 2 Wake Artists Exhibitions, Raleigh, NC; and the Eighth Annual National Ceramic Competition, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

Sculptor Bireline's work is in numerous corporate collections including ones at Glaxo-Smith-Kline, Raychem Corp., First Union National Bank, and Ceramics Monthly Magazine. This is Bireline's third exhibit at Somerhill Gallery. Previously she had been featured in a two-person exhibit in 1994 and 1998.

Sherri Wood explores color and design in her Florabunda series, a collection of hand-stitched fabric constructions. She incorporates engaging fabrics with intricate needlework to provide a composition that is both stimulating and inviting to her viewers.

Wood received her education from Bethany College and Emory University. She has exhibited her work at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, and the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC. She has been included in many publications and is also represented in many public as well as private collections. This will be the first feature exhibit for Sherri Wood at Somerhill Gallery.

As part of a special West Gallery Side Show, new realist landscapes by artist Ginny Stanford will be on exhibit. Stanford, a native of Missouri is a resident of Northern California. Since her first exhibit in 1974, the self-taught artist has exhibited widely throughout the US.

Stanford has received many honors for her painting. She is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who in the West. In 1990 and 1991, she was awarded Individual Artist Fellowships from the Sonoma Foundation. Stanford's paintings have graced the covers of many books, including the novels of Ellen Gilchrist and Anne Lamott. Artist Stanford, renown portrait painter as well has painted numerous NC portrait commissions.

In 1992, Stanford's portrait of MFK Fisher was purchased by the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution for its permanent collection. In 2000, this portrait was chosen to be part of A Brush With History, an exhibition of notable American portraits selected from the holdings of the National Portrait Gallery. 75 portraits of aesthetic importance were selected from 2 centuries represented in the collection of American portraiture to comprise this world traveling exhibit. Only three living artists have the honor of being part of this exhibit. It is currently on exhibit at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh, NC.

Previously at Somerhill Gallery, Stanford has been a participant in numerous group exhibits. She has been represented by Somerhill Gallery since 1988.
