Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Offers Three New Exhibitions in March

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will be offering three new exhibitions in March. In Gallery 1, from Mar. 7 through Apr. 26, 2003, the exhibit, New Works, featuring a juried exhibition of works by members of the Artspace Artists Association will be on view. Gallery 2 will present "Here and There", featuring works by Beatrice Schall from Mar. 7 through Apr. 19, 2003. Offered in the Upfront Gallery will be the exhibition, Family Tree, featuring works by Ellen Reinhold from Mar. 7-29, 2003.

New Works is an annual juried exhibition for members of the Artspace Artists Association. The Artspace Artists Association is a professional artist membership organization. Artists are accepted into the membership through a jury process that occurs twice per year. The exhibit represents work created within the past twelve months. It is an opportunity for Artspace Artists to present their most current and innovative work.

This year's juror is Dr. Sarah Schroth. Schroth earned an undergraduate degree in art history at Mary Washington College, and graduate desgrees from Georgia State (M.A.) and Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (PhD-specialty in Spanish art of the 17th century). In the late 70s, Schroth co-founded Beo, a non-profit artists' organization in Atlanta, dedicated to conceptual art, which coordinated exhibitions and produced an artist's book of the same name. Her past curatorial experience includes work at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, National Gallery of Art, D.C., and the Ackland Art Museum, UNC-CH. Schroth currently serves as Curator at Duke University Museum of Art, soon to become the Nasher Art Museum at Duke University.

Schroth will be presenting a Best of Show award as well as two Awards of Merit during the First Friday Gallery Reception, Mar. 7, 2003. A brief talk and the award presentation will begin at 7pm.

Beatrice Schall's exhibition Here and There will also open with a First Friday Gallery Walk in Gallery 2 of Artspace. The series explores the relationship between the cycles in life and nature in the context of the passage of space through time and memory. Schall incorporates photographic images of a path she walks daily. Often a dress or shadow form can be seen (representing the artist). The photographs are exhibited along with natural materials, such as bark, twigs, rocks, and flower petals, collected on the path or from the artist's environment. The series intends to tell a lyrical story, and explore the fragility of life. In addition, Schall explores the idea of "public" versus "private."

Schall graduated with a BA in Studio Art and a Master's of College Teaching in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Schall's has been honored with many awards and grants and her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Southeast. She has curated many exhibitions and been a visiting instructor at Guilford College and UNC-Chapel Hill. Her work has been published in Fiberarts Design Book III, The Vestige Series catalogue, and Kalliope, Journal of Women Writers and Artists.

The Apr. 4 First Friday event will feature a performance by Five Chicks Posse at 6:30, 8:00 and 9:15pm. The dance performance includes choreography inspired by Schall's artwork and will take place in Gallery 2 with Schall's exhibition. The exhibition will continue through Apr. 19, 2003.

Ellen Reinhold began her career as a painter, working in acrylics and oils. Over the past several years, she has explored printmaking, sculpture/installation, performance art and more. Only recently, Reinhold has returned to working in acrylics on canvas. Her exhibition, Family Tree, on view in Artspace's Upfront Gallery, explores the theme of home, motherhood, and the family constellation as places and roles we both yearn for and are uncomfortably bound by.

Reinhold notes that changes in her life often bring changes to her art. Her work has always been about capturing an emotional essence. She paints "from life" in the sense that personal experiences provide the impetus. Reinhold's leap into motherhood explains the recent appearance of the figure in her work. Although subtle at first, the figurative aspect has moved to the forefront of the works, along with a newly emerging landscape, reminiscent of the rural landscape of her childhood. These paintings are meditations on, and image poems of, the mysteries of human connection, our ties to each other, and the earth that holds us.

The Pennsylvania native received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, and her MFA in Drawing and Painting from Penn State Univeristy, University Park, Pennsylvania. She has exhibited throughout the region and has been a member of the Artspace Artists Association for almost ten years.
