March Issue 2003

South Carolina Watercolor Society Hosts Regional Gatherings in March

Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC, is presenting three exhibitions on view through Mar. 28, 2003. Included is: Recent Paintings, featuring works by Durham, NC, artist and UNC-G alumni, Margie Stewart; Monumental Baskets, by Archdale, NC, artist John L. Skau; and the 27th Annual Student Show: The Art of Line, featuring works by area middle and high school artists.

Margie Stewart is showing Recent Paintings in TAG's Main Gallery. Based on the theme of the four seasons, Stewart's oil paintings depict the colors, light and shadows of natural light in an abstract and painterly fashion. Inspired by still-life arrangements and interior scenes, Stewart transcends the objects and expresses the intrinsic quality of things.

Stewart earned her MFA from University of North Carolina -Greensboro, her MPD from NC State School of Design, her MEd from UNC-Chapel Hill, and her BS in Art Education from Western Carolina University. She is currently an adjunct Professor at Meredith College. She has shown at Christa Faut Gallery, Cornelius, NC, Sommerhill Gallery, Chapel Hill, NC, Duke University and Durham Art Guild, Durham, NC, Green Hill Center for NC Arts, Greensboro, NC, and Lincoln Center NYC.

"I paint and draw to explore the connection of my energy with the energy of the full abundant beauty of the world - infinite in variation, yet infinite in order," says Stewart.

In the exhibition, Monumental Baskets, John L. Skau presents an expansive installation of his large intricately woven forms in TAG's upstairs Gallery B. These "baskets" are elegant, minimal expressions of form that celebrate pattern using intricate woven structures. Using thin wooden strips, Skau creates woven patterns and highlights his designs with paint and varnish. He has exhibited in venues across the country including the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, DC, The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, The American Craft Museum in NYC, del Mano Gallery in LA, Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, Ghost Ranch Gallery in New Mexico, the US Embassy in Thailand, The Ohio Craft Museum, Penland School of Crafts, NC (where he has also taught), and the Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC.

Skau received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and his BFA, Summa Cum Laude from Northern Illinois University. Skau is an active member of the Archdale community and is very involved with the Archdale Public Library. "My sculptures are my way of celebrating the rich legacy of patterns and colors of world cultures... Each of my sculptural baskets is different from all others, and that's the part I love. That's what engages me as an artist," says Skau.

Also, exhibiting in the Kaleidoscope Youth Gallery is the 27th Annual Student Show: The Art of Line. Inspired by TAG-into-the-Schools outreach program, W-S artist William Fields will judge this show by middle and high school artists.

Theatre Arts Galleries is a non-profit visual art organization that presents exhibitions and educational programs focusing on quality visual arts.
