March Issue 2003

Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by James Emerson Crompton

The Grand Tour, a solo exhibition featuring recent oil paintings by James Emerson Crompton, will open at Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, on Mar. 6, 2003. Brilliantly colored, emotionally evocative landscapes of North Carolina and Europe and stirring maritime vistas will be on exhibit
at the gallery through Apr. 19, 2003.

Born to a family of professional musicians, Crompton chose art as his vocation. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City and later drew cartoons for Stars and Stripes after joining the Army. He continued his art education in Europe, attending ecoles in France and Spain. Upon returning to the United States, he was admitted to the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles.

Crompton settled in Florida for several years where he taught at various art schools and conducted workshops for artists. To this day, he is a well-respected and very popular teacher among students of art. While in Florida, Crompton was commissioned to do many murals and oil paintings for public places, including the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the University of Florida.

Moved by the beauty and serenity of the North Carolina mountains, Crompton relocated from Florida to rural North Carolina in 1992. One of his favorite subjects is the magnificent scenery of those mountains. His paintings evoke a warm emotional response from viewers, as Crompton is able to capture the very essence of the subjects he paints. His classical training shows through in every one of his paintings, as individuals and landscapes are portrayed with vivid colors and romantic expression.
